"Train up a child in the way he should go; and when he is old he will not depart
from it."
Ethically and practically it is undesirable to manipulate emotions, attitudes and
values among children. But we can neither be too permissive nor too restrictive.
It is necessary to lay down some norms and guidelines because the child has to recognize
the point at which he can and should draw back. It is a delicate balance of 'Laissez
- Faire and that's enough'.
A child treated in a fair way has an opportunity of
becoming self-confident, self-reliant and as asset to the society. It is for the
educationist to ensure that an environment conducive for the blossoming of a tender
bud is created. John Locke, the British philosopher, viewed the child's experience
and education as determinants to his development. The creative child expresses his
special talents in a myriad ways. It is our responsibility to mould his individuality
without destroying the basic foundation on which a happy childhood rests. Let us
build our castles on these happy foundations. Let us not forget, "As the twig is
bent, so grows the tree."
